- We covered two vital topics last meeting: our impact on human trafficking and policy for children's rights in the US government. To begin this meeting, we went over the practical significance of participating in both of these activities:
- Getting to know your slavery footprint was not meant to make you feel bad, it was to inspire within you a change of perspective. You now know how close to home this problem is, and now you have a responsibility to rectify it. We encourage you to retake the survey, this time reading the small excerpts they include throughout it giving insight on the state of affairs of children around the world. Ex: "every day tens of thousands of Indian children mine mica, which is the little sparklies in the makeup."
- Advocacy is, from our three goals, the hardest one to achieve. This is because it entails raising your voice in the crowd and taking a stand. So give yourself a pat on the back! You're making real change happen in the world from your petition-signing
- Gender inequality is our featured topic of February, referring to the idea that women are limited in their potential due to a lack of opportunity. Play the video below to find out why this is such a big problem. When you educate women, you ensure their children grow up in a stable household, and thus prevent a generation of lives from the viscous cycle of poverty.
- To connect what we've learned to the importance of advocacy we discussed, our club will be participating in the LEAP Project next meeting. LEAP stands for Leading Effective Awareness through Photography, and the project calls on students to combine pictures with quotations to raise awareness for causes that matter. Next meeting will, therefore, count for two membership points!
- Finally, webinar opportunities! UNICEF is really honing in on connecting volunteers from all over the countries and have so initiated several WebEx meetings open to public attendance. The first will be on February 9 and cover ways to get involved with UNICEF USA and the second on February 16 covering how to host a successful fundraiser. 2 points allocated per participation so long as you take brief notes on some of the major points discussed.
