- Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is now over and the grand total has been calculated as (drumroll, please) $534.62! Not bad for one night if you ask me! To put this total in perspective, let me take this opportunity to tell you just where your dollars are going:
- Give a child 40 days of clean, safe water for $1
- Feed a malnourished child for 5 days for $5
- Vaccinate 280 children for $10
- Protect 100 kids from malaria for $100
- Install a water pump to serve a whole village for $500
- But we would not have been able to accomplish these things without the bipartisan support of both Center Middle School and Kinsner Elementary. The enthusiasm demonstrated by each of these schools was stunning. We look forward to partnering with them again in the future.
- As it is a new month, our featured topic is now children's rights. We discussed some points regarding the CRC, or the Convention on the Right's of Child. This was the first international treaty that recognized children as people with human rights rather than just possessions. Today, there are two countries who haven't ratified the CRC, Somalia and good ol' America. To name a few uses, UNICEF utilizes the CRC to prevent child marriages (which are still prevalent in some countries) and to create foster homes for orphans,
- T-shirt drive is now officially underway. You can scroll down a little to find an image of the shirt. The price is $13.05 and will be due at our next meeting on December 4. Note that we are only having one November meeting due to Thanksgiving Break.
- After careful consideration, we have chosen our new event planner to be Aabha Daryapukar. Not only was she the first person to show interest in the position, she was also the first person to turn in the form. She has committedly attended all meetings and shows great promise from her application.
- With Thanksgiving coming up, we decided to team up with an organization called Cards for Hospitalized Kids. An uplifting, handmade card truly helps kids undergoing medical treatment by brightening their day, making them feel special & reminding them they are not forgotten because they are sick. A simple thank you is just not enough to express how grateful we are to Sophie Kovach, who generously brought in all the paper we used to make our cards.
